At the hospital entrance there’s a nurse that asks me my relation to the child. I open my mouth already knowing what they’re going to say. That they can’t give out any information about minors unless they’re family.

I’m preparing to deck this dragon at the gate to get past him when I hear, “She’s my wife. Not the mother.”

I spin around to see Danny coming through side doors holding his hand out to me. Snapping my mouth closed, I grab his hand and he walks us back through the swinging doors.

“What the hell’s going on, Danny?” I ask him shakily.

He winds his way to the elevators and steps on, pulling me with him just as they close. He’s holding tightly to my hand but not hurting me. I bite my lips in the crowded elevator to keep my questions from bursting from my mouth. Finally, we get off at pediatrics, where there are cartoon murals on every wall. We walk down a hall and take a right turn before stepping into an empty patient room, and shuts the door.

Danny sags against it and I notice the lines on his face for the first time. His plaid shirt is wrinkled and his Carhartt jacket is tossed on a chair in the corner. His face is pale and hair askew, as if he’s been running his hands through it over and over. He looks over at me, haggard.

“Danny, he’s ok right?” I choke out with tears in my eyes.

He shakes his head slightly before his own eyes start watering. “I got the fax and sped to the house listed on the forms. Brooke must have known I wouldn’t wait. Halfway there a police cruiser pulled in behind me and followed to the house. When I got there I could hear yelling. The door was unlocked. She was . . . shh-shaking him . . . by his arm . . . and then dropped him when I came in. I scooped him up and drove to the hospital. The police called for backup I guess, and arrested her. They took him for scans. They’re worried about shh . . . shaken baby syndrome and a concussion. He’s sedated. He’s got a broken collar bone and fractured arm.”

My hand is over my mouth as tears stream down my face. I take a step toward him and he wraps his arm around my shoulder for the first time.

I put my hand around his waist and cry into his chest. Sob for the perfect boy I kissed on the cheek this morning. I mourn for this baby that has done nothing wrong and has one loving parent who found out about him too late.

I also hug Danny to me, giving strength. His baby, that he just met, has been hurt by someone who should love him more than anything. She should have protected him. He had to hand over his child, not knowing what would happen, to follow the law, in order to get him in the long run.
